My grandfather: The Series.
********

He told many stories about Japan but it wasn't until I saw Saving Private Ryan that I realized that the rose-colored wartime experiences he described were likely not the whole story. I was right. There was a lot he couldn't talk about. I guess that's a common trait in his generation--I bet you've never heard this account of one of George H.W. Bush's missions. [WARNING: It is a gruesome story, as a hover over the link will show.] That would be all over the news today--up-to-the-minute updates, primetime specials, magazine covers, etc. Uh, let's move on from this pleasant topic, shall we?

The American dream.

I'm very surprised that his shirt is so sloppy here; he was a very conscientious dresser. Of course, he actually drank back then. This is somewhere in Texas.

Most of these were from a project my mom made, hence the staples.

Plaid with argyle is very bold. I wonder if it's in kelly green. It always was his favorite color.

And the sons of pullman porters
And the sons of engineers
Ride their father's magic carpets made of steel.
Mothers with their babes asleep,
Are rockin' to the gentle beat
And the rhythm of the rails is all they feel.

Oh hey, it's my grandmother! And now we're in the 50s.

And now for a picture that is equal parts LOL and OMG.

First, the LOL: That's my great uncle Larry, my grandfather's youngest brother, on the back right and I guess teenage boys were issued that outfit in the 50s.

On the left is my great aunt Nona. She is my grandfather's brother Bud's wife. Y'all remember that time I got in a fight with a monkey? That was their place.

The OMG is for the man on the front right. That's my great-grandfather in a rare photo--this is only the second photo I've ever seen of him. I don't really know how to express how finding this made me feel except...

Ugh, I know shit goes down in a war, but holy shit. Ugh.

P.S. - I want your grandmother's dress in that photo.

I so want to start something like this, but so much stuff got destroyed when my grandparents fled Poland, I don't even know what survived. I should do a search.

I can't comment on gruesomeness because it's too early in the morning, so on to...

..OMG! I adore other people's ye olde photos. Yours are particularly gorgeous. Also, I covet your grandmother's stripey dress and fab hair.
