Where the light is.
Jun. 7th, 2007 03:12 am1) O hay, People magazine. Way to be a biter.
2) The cool kids at Fader finally figured out something old people with no fashion sense knew four decades ago--Jerry Garcia is awesome. And also, incredibly underrated by the mainstream media. So, the feature article in the current issue is all about him. They say:
"...we feel Jerry Garcia to be an incredibly relevant force in music right now—for hippies and non-hippies alike. Sonically, you can hear strains of Garcia's influence all over the place, from Cali neo folk to the psych renaissance to straight-ahead rock jams piping out of a Downtown Near You. Fundamentally, Garcia's attitude towards making music—and the attitude adopted by fans of it—really was one of love and acceptance, both of which happen to be timely and wildly underrated ideas for this 21st Century of ours."
Trufax!
3) I've been reading a lot of Chuck Palahniuk lately. I'd never read anything by him, mostly because I'm turned off by his fans. I could do without the legion of "unique snowflake"-quoting icons, kthnx. But overall, I like his work. It's kind of hard to read sometimes--he'll follow up something funny with something heartstoppingly sad. But it's good. I've read Choke, Lullaby, and Haunted so far. I thought the latter was kind of weak overall--I liked the short stories better than the big picture.
4) I've also been reading Jodi Picoult. What? They're near the Palahniuk at the library. When I was reading the last one (The Tenth Circle), it occurred to me that they're women's novels but not in a bad way. What I mean is, the protagonists are usually women and the books deal with so-called women's issues--unwanted pregnancy, rape, etc--but Picoult shows that these things don't just affect one person. And she puts a twist on it, whether it's setting a book in an Amish community or inserting pages from a character's graphic novel into the text.
5) If you haven't seen it, "What the World Eats," Time's excerpt from Hungry Planet, is really fascinating. And okay, it made me cry for some reason. Maybe it's because the Aboubakar family could live for a year on what my boyfriend and I spend on dinner. I bet the Kelloggs never dreamed people in Kuwait would be eating Corn Flakes.
6) And if you haven't heard, BPAL has two Paris-inspired scents that will be available for the duration of her time in jail. A portion of the proceeds does go to charity. Schadenfreude is always free.
7) And if you didn't know, Eli Roth has the biggest dick in Hollywood. [NOT SAFE FOR WORK, SMALL ANIMALS OR GRANDMAS.] Oh, Eli.
( And now, a music meme. )

sammyh!
I am so, so tired or I would come up with something really clever and fun to say along with that. But that's not going to happen right now. Maybe tomorrow. Anyway, I hope it was swell!

Numbers game.
Apr. 3rd, 2007 09:55 amHahahaahaha.
zooby gave me her new cell phone number this morning. I sent a text this morning basically asking, "Did this work?" because our texts haven't been going through the LJ service. Zooby sent me a text afterward and I went on my merry way.
Then, I got a message back from the number I'd put in saying "?" I responded, "Question mark!" And then I got "Who is this?" I thought Zoob was smoking crack (an easy assumption), so I replied, "This is your balls." Then I realized I put the number in wrong.
WHATEVA WHATEVA! I HAVE DYSCALCULIA, U DUN NO ME!

Mar. 30th, 2007 05:22 amHere are a few screencaps from When the Levees Broke that I've been meaning to post--just a few images that I found particularly moving, presented with no editorializing. (Note: Images are somewhat large.)

Step One: We can have lots of fun.
Mar. 27th, 2007 04:10 amIn retrospect, I'm surprised that it never occurred to me that it was weird that Jon was the only member of New Kids on the Block with a named girlfriend. I dunno--I just never drew the appropriate conclusion.
Deep thoughts inspired by this post.

Mar. 27th, 2007 01:22 am*You know what I love about the Neanderthals? Well, lots of things. But in this specific instance, how we react to having a boyfriend the same way someone else would react to "You have cooties" or "You just sat in it."
*Also, I like coming up with Neanderthal crew-related catchphrases for my signature on a forum. I should have really kept count. I think my favorite so far was, "I'll call M [
monooka] on the phone!" but I was also fond of "D's [
princessdidi] aura is purple!" Right now, it's "Drop a heart, break a name." Some newbie there accusing me of name-dropping the other day. Yes, mentioning someone's name on their band's forum is totally name-dropping.
*The other day, I noticed a couch cushion looked like it was turned the wrong way, so I went to adjust it. I pulled it off the couch and I found my headband and an imp of BPAL Hellcat, which I haven't seen since probably January 2006. I didn't care for it too much when I got it (it was a freebie extra) but the aging has turned it into an incredible scent. From no good to so good!
*I got caught up on the last two episodes of Ugly Betty last night and I know that America gets the bulk of the attention for that show, for good reason, but...Michael Urie is so good. Clips of him being hilarious are a dime-a-dozen on the internets but here's the one that'll break your heart. Spoilery if you didn't see last Thursday's episode.
*The CGI is unfinished but here is the first footage from The Golden Compass, aka the His Dark Materials movie, aka OMGOMGOMG. Again, unfinished CGI but that Iorek roar made me very gleeful.
*Paolo Nutini is making me want to go to Bonnaroo and seriously, nuclear fallout couldn't make me want to go to Bonnaroo.
*I am finally reviewing Creepy, the last to go in my loooong overdue BPAL reviews. Hooray!

Mar. 21st, 2007 01:35 pmaka Saving something for myself; you can move along if you like.
"I feel there are certain people who are systematically ripping [feminism] down because of their lack of regard and their ignorance about what the women before us had to go through." Is she referring to Hollywood power brokers, or to starlets like Jessica Simpson and Paris Hilton, whose fame plays on certain stereotypes? She doesn't even pause. "I don't think these women are stupid. I think they're selling a personality that's very marketable: 'Wouldn't it be fun if we were all gorgeous and didn't have a care?' But creating a cultural icon out of someone who goes, 'I'm stupid, isn't it cute?' makes me want to throw daggers at them! I want to say to them, 'My grandma did not fight for what she fought for, and my mother did not fight for what she fought for, so you can start telling women it's fun to be stupid.' Saying that to young women, little girls, my daughter? It's not okay."
But while we're here, have you seen her issue of Harper's? The cover isn't that great but inside...good God a'mighty.

Between science and superstition.
Mar. 8th, 2007 06:13 pmMost of you already know that I love The Twilight Zone. At its best, it's a work of art. And at its worst...it's still pretty good TV. Also, Rod Serling is a genius. A hot genius. On that note, here is a list of some of my favorites and a list of some of the classics. It's by no means definitive--it's a dip of the toe into the must sees.

Feb. 19th, 2007 09:40 amI am sitting in my own office, writing cards to past (and hopefully my future) clientele, and listening to my iPod. I just booked my first appointment and I am filled with a strange feeling, something that feels a lot like hope.
